The late lamented Lt General S.
funeral was the largest [ever] known
in Devonshire Being Commander
in Chief of the Western District
there was a very large body of
Troops attended Infantry & Cavalry
& artillery many thousands as
the procession was going out
of Exeter a long train of Carriages
followed the streets lined with
Troops arms [reven]ed to the
procession left Exeter for Wolford
Lodge Artillery stationed
at straight way head & [F]enny Bridges
firing great guns as the procession
passed on The East Devon [yeomans]
cavalry was at the battery on St
[Cyrs hill]
as the funeral passed thro' Honiton the
shops were closed the street on both
sides lined with Troops arms [revened] part of the
3d
Regt
of the Dragoon guards
proceeded the procession one thing
looked very striking a dragoon leading
the Genls
charger with his accoutrements
on it the procession arrived at
the chapel attended by thousands
the great guns were fired when the
body was laid in the grave the
very house at Wolford shook
what great difference will it be
when this body will rise again at
the resurrection what great
difference when the sound of the
mighty Trumpet when the powers
of the Heavens shall be shaken
