Grt Island Aug. 17th 1682
Sr
I hope you have received that of ye
22d
of January date, which I doubt lay
long at Boston or on ye
coast of New Engld
(for I think Joles by whom Mr
Randolph sent it staid at Long Island some time) wherein I gave you
that immediate account how far I have proceeded in your concern of
Surveyor & Auditor of His Majts
Revenues here, that I cannot make more
addition in this, such is ye
dealing of our Governors & those too of Boston, —
whose [actings] those of ours are merely a Transcript. I can only acquaint
you that I offerd in ful Control (after I had read ye
Grants & was [checkd]
for my forwardness in affecting that of Mr
Randolphs) to give them co=
pies as they seemingly desired, & pr
tending they could not retain ye
contents
(tho they had bin read before too, as I wrote to you) & desired ye
entry of yours
in ye
Councel Book. But ye
President declared positively & with some heat, he
would take notice of no copies of no copies & bid us not to deceive ourselves
& this was at ye
hearing of Mr Randolph's business wherein Captn
Bare
foot was imediately (as Deputy) concernd for seising a vessel. Afterwards —
when ye
original Exemplification came to my hands (which was May first)
staying for ye
true (now) Governor (not coming tho) Mr Randolph, who did,
& was present at our Council meeting & that of ye
Deputies (by adjournment) in
ye
beginning of July, I read them all agen & agen desired ye
entry of them;
but had for answer, that we should hear from Engld
in a short time as to
confirmation of disallowment of our Laws here, & that there would be a new
Governr
& therefore better defer it a little longer. But I understood by them
they would stand upon & keep up their Autority in my business as wel as
Mr Randolphs & that I must act purely under that & have [illegible] from them
for every p[ar]ticular act & proceeding therein & that they ought to have ye
fine
for ye
destroying ye
public charge. I hope the Governors coming, which we are
impatient for, wil settle this matter & many others & change this cloudy face
of things to a clearer & more pleasant aspect. I am
